Effects of Wind, Waves, and Currents on Icebergs and Surface Floats in the Labrador Sea: A Modeling Study

This article presents a model study of the dynamics icebergs and surface floats in Labrador Sea. The was forced with data on wind above ocean surface, waves, currents. These were obtained from reanalysis near-surface characteristics atmosphere for year 2008. Icebergs launched an area north coast to east Greenland generally move southeastward until they reach boundary current “highway”. After that, are carried by currents into central part subpolar North Atlantic. Simulations demonstrated smaller icebergs, primary balance is between air water drag, while larger it three forces: drag combined Coriolis pressure forces. Floats, other hand, driven mostly Ekman component velocity, geostrophic Stokes components less important. significant variability motion due storms passing over Sea, since these high-wind events introduce time-dependent dynamics.
